Church of Holy Elizabeth

The Church of Holy Elizabeth is a small place of worship in Baške Oštarije, a mountain hamlet on the Velebit range, in Lika-Senj County. The village sits on a high pass at about 924 metres above sea level, where the road from Gospić crosses the mountain on its way down to Karlobag and the Adriatic coast. It is one of the highest settlements on the Velebit road, and its position between the cold inland highlands and the warm sea has defined its character for generations. In winter it can be snowy and windswept, and in summer it is cool, green and quiet, a world away from the coast just a short drive below.

The name of the village tells part of its story. Oštarije is a local form of a word for inns, and it recalls the roadside houses where travellers, merchants and drovers once stopped to rest, eat and change horses on the long journey between the interior and the sea. This route was historically important for trade, bringing salt, livestock and goods through the passes of the Velebit, and a place like Baške Oštarije was a natural halt. Today the road is used by drivers and cyclists, but the idea of a resting place on the mountain remains.

The church is the spiritual centre of the community. It is small and plain, in keeping with the character of a highland village, and it serves residents and the descendants of families who left but return for religious holidays and gatherings. Visitors should expect a modest building rather than a grand monument, with the main interest lying in its setting and its role in village life. The interior is usually open only at service times, so most people will see it from outside, among meadows and low stone walls, with the mountain slopes rising behind it.

The surrounding landscape is the main attraction. Trails from the village lead into the Velebit mountains, with beech forests, open pastures and viewpoints toward the sea, and the village offers a quiet atmosphere for walkers. The Vegium Recreation Centre and the Hostel Baške Oštarije provide basic services and places to stay, which makes the hamlet a convenient base for hikers and cyclists.

The church suits travellers on the road between Gospić and Karlobag who want a short stop, as well as nature lovers exploring the Velebit. Bring warm clothing even in summer, since the wind can be cold at this height, and respect the quiet of the place.
