Donje Oroslavje Castle
18th-century Baroque castle with rare mythological art
Donje Oroslavje Castle, located in the town of Oroslavje just 36 kilometers north of Zagreb, Croatia, is a striking example of late baroque architecture and a testament to the region’s rich aristocratic heritage. Built in the late 18th century by Sigismund Vojković, a royal chamberlain during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, the castle features a distinctive U-shaped layout and a prominent central tower. Its interior vaults are adorned with rare late baroque paintings depicting scenes from Greek and Roman mythology, and the main hall houses the only preserved late-baroque-classicist stove in Croatia.
Surrounding the castle is a beautifully landscaped park, established in the late 18th century and later enhanced in the 19th century with classicist elements and exotic trees from around the world. The park’s design reflects the tastes of the nobility who once called the castle home, offering visitors a tranquil setting for a leisurely stroll.
Throughout its history, Donje Oroslavje Castle has changed hands several times, most notably being acquired by businessman Milan Prpić in 1920. While the castle is currently in a state of neglect and specific visitor information such as opening hours and admission fees are not provided, its architectural and historical significance make it a worthwhile stop for those interested in Croatia’s cultural heritage. The castle and its park offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past and the enduring beauty of the Croatian Zagorje region.
