The Karlovac City Museum, known locally as the Town Museum, is the main museum of Karlovac, the city in central Croatia, southwest of Zagreb, where four rivers meet. It is housed in a historic mansion in the old centre, and it holds collections on the archaeology, history, ethnography and culture of the city and its surroundings, which helps explain why Karlovac looks and feels the way it does.
Karlovac has an unusual origin. It was founded in 1579 as a fortress town by Archduke Charles of Austria, from whom its name derives, as a bastion on the Military Frontier, the defensive zone that the Habsburg monarchy built against the advancing Ottomans. The new town was laid out as a six-pointed star, a design based on Renaissance ideas of the ideal fortress, with moats, bastions and a regular grid of streets inside. The star shape, known as Zvijezda, is still visible in the plan of the old centre and in the green belt that follows the line of the old moat. Four rivers, the Kupa, the Korana, the Mrežnica and the Dobra, flow near the city, and the water gives it a distinctive character, with bridges, parks and riverside walks.
The museum’s collections reflect that history. Archaeological objects tell about the area from prehistory through Roman times and the Middle Ages, and historical displays follow the growth of the fortress town and its role as a trade centre on the road between Zagreb and the coast. Ethnographic items illustrate the traditional life, crafts and costumes of the region, which includes the countryside of Kordun and the lower Pokuplje, and an ethnological collection is held in a separate building in the city. The museum’s aim, as with most city museums, is to preserve local memory and to explain it to residents and visitors alike.
The institution also looks after other cultural sites, which give a wider picture. The Vjekoslav Karas Gallery shows work associated with the nineteenth-century painter born in Karlovac, and the Homeland War Museum, at Turanj on the edge of the city, covers the conflict of the 1990s, when the front line ran close to Karlovac. Together with the Karlovac Art Gallery, these places make the city a good one for those interested in culture, and the Mrežnica River canyons nearby are a scenic excursion.
It is worth checking opening hours before visiting, since the main building may occasionally close for maintenance or restoration, and ticket prices often differ for adults, students and pensioners. Visitors will find that a visit takes about an hour. The museum suits history lovers and curious travellers breaking the journey between Zagreb and the coast, and a walk around the star-shaped centre makes a good addition.
