Labyrinth of Love

The Labyrinth of Love is a living labyrinth in Sveti Martin na Muri, a small village in Međimurje, the northernmost part of Croatia, between the Mura and Drava rivers. It stands near the Visitor Centre Žabnik, in the Mura-Drava Regional Park, a protected river landscape known for its floodplain forests, meanders and wildlife, and it forms part of a small complex that celebrates the nature and culture of the area. The labyrinth is made of plants, and its paths wind between green walls, so walking it is both a playful and a thoughtful activity. It was designed to promote positive energy and reflection, and many visitors treat it as a gentle pause during a longer outing, whether they come as couples, families or friends.

Unlike a maze, which is a puzzle full of dead ends, a labyrinth has a single path to the centre and back, so there is no need to make choices. This makes it restful for adults and easy for children, and the shape of the walk, curving and turning, slows the pace of walkers and invites attention to the surroundings. The setting is pleasant, with grass, trees and the open sky of the river plain, and the wide views and the sound of birds add to the calm. The experience takes only a short time, but it is memorable, particularly in early summer when the plants are fresh and green.

The labyrinth is next to the floating mill, one of the most distinctive attractions of the area. This is a replica of the traditional mills that once floated on the Mura, anchored in the current, with a large wheel turned by the flow of the river. The replica was restored in 2006 and contains an original mechanism from 1902, so it gives a real sense of how grain was ground in the past. Nearby, the Miller's House offers a taste of local cuisine, including traditional Međimurje dishes, such as the layered cake called Međimurje gibanica, which makes a pleasant end to the visit. Visitors can also see an ethnographic collection and a three-dimensional film about milling and local life, which explain how people lived with the river.

The site is on the Mura cycle route, so it is a popular stop for cyclists and hikers, who find places to rest, eat and learn about the region. The labyrinth is managed by the local tourist board in connection with the visitor centre, and it is easily accessible. Opening hours and fees may change with the season, so check ahead. Local wineries and vineyards around Sveti Martin offer tastings.

The labyrinth suits families, couples and cyclists. Allow an hour or two for the labyrinth, the mill and a meal, and bring insect repellent in summer, since the river area can be buzzing with mosquitoes.
