Lake Sveti Rok

Lake Sveti Rok, sometimes called Lake Opsenica by local people, is a small lake near the village of Sveti Rok in the municipality of Lovinac, in the southern part of Lika-Senj County. It is not a major attraction, and it gets few visitors, but for travellers crossing the country on the A1 motorway it offers a quiet stop in one of Croatia’s least crowded regions.

The setting is characteristic of Lika. This is a high plateau country, with wide, open karst fields, low hills covered with scrubby woodland and meadows, and the long, grey wall of Velebit rising on the western horizon. Winters are cold and snowy, summers are warm and dry, and the landscape feels spacious and empty compared with the busy coast on the other side of the mountains. The lake sits in this setting among gentle hills, and its still water reflects the sky and the surrounding slopes, which makes it a pleasant spot for a short walk or a picnic.

Lika has a long and complicated history that helps explain why it looks as it does. For centuries it was a border region, part of the Military Frontier that the Austrian Habsburg monarchy maintained against the Ottoman Empire, and settlers were encouraged to farm and defend the land. The villages of the area, including Sveti Rok, took shape in this period, and many carry the names of saints, in this case Saint Roch, a patron saint invoked against plague. In the twentieth century the area was affected by war and depopulation, and today it has few residents and a quiet character, with small farms and scattered houses.

The village of Sveti Rok is best known today because of the motorway tunnel that bears its name, the long tube that carries the A1 under Velebit. The Sveti Rok Tunnel is a short drive away, so the lake and the tunnel are often mentioned together, but they belong to different worlds: one is a piece of modern infrastructure, the other a bit of slow rural scenery. While the lake is pleasant, facilities there are minimal, with no entry fee or posted hours, so bring water and food and take your rubbish with you.

It suits cyclists, families on a long journey and anyone who prefers still, empty places to organised attractions. It is a modest stop, best seen in spring and autumn when the light is softer, and it makes a calm break before the long drive to the coast or Zagreb.
