Njivice Beaches

Njivice is a small seaside resort on the northwestern coast of Krk Island in Croatia, where the Adriatic Sea opens into the Kvarner Gulf, and the beaches along its bay are the main reason families come. The island is often called the Golden Island, and this stretch of shore is a good example of the relaxed, low-key holiday style found on the northern side of Krk, a short drive from the Krk bridge and the airport at Rijeka.

The shoreline here is mostly pebble and rock, with small coves and flat concrete platforms that let swimmers step into the sea. The water shelves gently in places and is clear, which suits children and those who prefer a calm swim to a day of waves. Pine trees grow close to the water in many spots and provide some shade, and a paved waterfront path links the main beaches to the harbour and the centre of the village. Small beach bars, ice cream stands and rental kiosks operate in season, and water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking and pedal boats can usually be hired. Because the village is compact, nearly everything is within a short walk of the sand.

Njivice has a modest harbour with fishing boats and visiting yachts, a waterfront promenade with a marina, and a handful of bars and clubs that come alive in summer. In the evening the promenade fills with strollers, and restaurants serve grilled fish, squid and local wines. The pace is gentle, and it stays that way even in the busiest weeks of August.

The location also makes a good base for exploring the rest of the island. Krk Town and its walls, the villages of Malinska and Omišalj, and the coves of the nearby coastline are all easy to reach by car or bus. Day trips by car or by organised tour can also take in Plitvice Lakes National Park, though that is a long day, and boat trips run along the coast in summer.

Njivice suits families with young children, couples who want a quiet seaside break and travellers who prefer a small resort to a busy town. Beaches are free to use, though sunbeds and parking may cost extra, and the best months for swimming run from June to September.
