Sv Juraj na bregu

Sveti Juraj na Bregu, which means St. George on the Hill, is a municipality in the rolling hills of Međimurje County, the small, green region in the far north of Croatia between the Mura and the Drava. It lies a short distance from Čakovec, the regional capital, and from Nedelišće, and it is made up of several villages, among them Lopatinec, scattered over the low ridges known as the Međimurje hills. Its landmark is the Church of St. George, set on a rise, with a tall tower that can be seen from far across the surrounding landscape.

Churches of St. George (Sveti Juraj) are common in Međimurje, and the saint has a particular place in the local calendar. His feast day, on 23 April, marks the arrival of spring in much of Central Europe, and in this part of Croatia it is celebrated with Mass, processions and village gatherings. Saint George is also the patron of knights and farmers, and he is usually shown on horseback slaying a dragon, a story that has long been a favourite subject for church painters and sculptors. In a hilltop village, the church serves as the landmark and the focus of community life, and the setting gives it a particular grace: the building stands with the sky behind it, and the sun sets over the fields and orchards below.

The landscape around the church is typical of Međimurje. The hills are covered with vineyards, orchards and small woods, and the slopes are dotted with traditional wine cellars called klijeti, where families make wine and welcome visitors. Fields of maize and pumpkins fill the valleys, and the pumpkin-seed oil of the region is a well-known product. The area is ideal for slow travel, with quiet roads, cycling routes and footpaths that connect the villages, and the pace of life is unhurried. The St. John the Baptist Chapel is one of the small chapels in the area that add to the pattern of rural churches.

Because the municipality is small and rural, services are modest, and a car or bicycle is the best way to get around. The area is close to larger attractions, among them Zrinski Castle in Čakovec, the Baroque old town of Varaždin and the thermal springs of the region, so it can be part of a longer tour. Opening times of the church depend on services, so ask locally if you wish to see the interior.

The hilltop suits walkers, cyclists, photographers and travellers who like countryside and wine. Visit in spring, when the orchards bloom, or in autumn, when the vineyards turn gold.
