Topusko Spa

Topusko is a small spa town in the Banovina region of central Croatia, roughly 100 kilometres south of Zagreb and close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The town grew around natural thermal springs, and the use of these waters is very old. Roman settlers knew the place as a bathing site, and local tradition holds that the hot springs were used for thousands of years before them. Over the centuries, the town was developed as a spa, and its park, villas and bath buildings give it the quiet character of a classic 19th-century health resort.

The water rises hot from deep underground and is rich in minerals, which is why it has been used for treating rheumatic complaints and for rehabilitation. The modern spa complex offers thermal pools, wellness services and medical treatments, and it provides a restful stay for people who want to combine bathing with long walks in the surrounding woods. The setting is green and calm, with oak and beech forests and low hills around the town. The English Park, an old landscaped park with large trees and shaded paths, is the best place for a stroll and is central to the town's atmosphere.

There are several smaller sights to find on foot. Mollinariyevo Spring is one of the local springs, while the 19th-century Medical Restoration building recalls the era when the spa was modernised. The ruins of Opatovina, the site of a medieval monastery, are another point of interest, and visitors are shown the remains of a Pauline monastery and a tomb attributed to a king. Nikolino brdo is a wooded hill with walking routes, and the lake known as Ribnjak adds a quieter water view. A sundial in the park is a curious detail for those who like small monuments. In the Second World War, Topusko also became an important centre for the Partisan movement, and its role in that period is remembered in local memorials.

The spa is a good choice for rest. A visit can be as short as a few hours of bathing, or it can fill a weekend with treatments, walks and slow meals. Because the town is small, the pace is gentle, and there are few crowds even in summer.
