Bjelovar

Bjelovar’s history dates back to the 18th century, when it was established as a military fortress by the Habsburg Monarchy to defend against Ottoman incursions. The town was founded in 1756 by order of Empress Maria Theresa, and it served as the center of the Bjelovar regiment of the Military Frontier. Over time the town grew into a regional center for trade, culture and administration. The central square, lined with elegant buildings and lively cafes, is a hub of activity and a good place to take in the local atmosphere. The Bjelovar Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of Saint Teresa of Avila, has a striking neoclassical facade and anchors one side of the square, and the Church of St. Teresa of Avila is a highlight for lovers of art and architecture. One of the town’s most significant landmarks is the Memorial of Barutana, dedicated to the victims of the Croatian War of Independence. The name Barutana means powder magazine, and the memorial stands in a former military building. The Bjelovar City Museum, also called the Regional Museum, shows local art, history and ethnography, while the International Cartoon Salon Cvorak brings together artists from around the world for exhibitions and workshops, a tradition that has made the town known among cartoonists. The Music Pavilion on Eugen Kvaternik Square is a beloved landmark and social hub, and concerts are held there in summer.
