The Batana Eco-Museum, also called the Batana House (Kuća o batani), is a small museum on the waterfront of Rovinj, Croatia, at Obala Pina Budicina 2, devoted to a humble working boat. The batana is a flat-bottomed wooden boat, about four to five metres long, that Rovinj fishermen used for centuries in the shallow waters around the town. It was cheap to build, stable, easy to row and light enough to be pulled ashore, and in the hands of local fishermen it became a symbol of the town's maritime identity.
The museum was set up to look after more than the object itself. It documents the skills and customs around the boat: how it is built, how it is sailed and rowed, the fishing methods used with it, the nets and tackle, and the dialect words used by Rovinj's fishing families. The project has been recognised internationally, including by UNESCO, and it is described as a good example of safeguarding intangible heritage, meaning living knowledge rather than monuments. Through photographs, short films, models and equipment, visitors can follow the story from workshop to sea.
Rovinj's fishing community has long mixed Croatian and Italian speakers, and the local Istrian-Venetian dialect, with its distinctive songs, is a part of the heritage the museum wants to keep alive. The museum is also linked to the annual Batana festival, known as the Bitinada, when wooden boats fill the harbour and local singers perform, and to workshops where visitors can try net mending or learn more about boat building. Many of these activities are seasonal, so it is best to check what is on during your stay.
The location is another advantage. The museum stands only a few steps from the harbour and the old town, near the Church of St. Euphemia and Grisia Street, so it fits easily into a walk through Rovinj. Visiting takes about an hour, and the small scale makes it a good choice for families with children, as it can be seen without long queues or tiring distances. Opening times vary by season, so check locally before you go.
It suits anyone curious about how an ordinary working boat can hold a community's memory, and those who prefer hands-on, local experiences to big museums. After the visit, a stroll along the quay with the real boats moored alongside gives a vivid picture of what the exhibits describe.
