Central Square Of Velika Gorica

The central square of Velika Gorica is the main public space of the town, the largest urban centre in Zagreb County, immediately south of the capital. Velika Gorica sits in the Turopolje plain, a flat and fertile region on the Sava river, and its position next to Zagreb's international airport gives it a particular character, since many travellers pass through, and the town has grown rapidly in recent decades. The name Gorica, which means a small hill or vineyard, is old, and the town is first mentioned in the 13th century, with Velika, meaning great, added to distinguish it from a smaller place of the same name. Despite its modern appearance, the area has a long history, particularly linked to the noble commune of Turopolje, one of the oldest self-governing noble communities in Croatia, with its own traditions, forests and customs.

The square functions as the social and cultural hub of the town. It combines contemporary urban design with the practical needs of a busy centre, with paved areas, seating, trees and planters, and clear paths that make it easy to cross. Around it, you find cafés, restaurants, shops and public buildings, so it is a natural place to meet, to shop and to relax. The atmosphere is lively but relaxed, and residents of all ages use it, from parents with pushchairs to young people and older people sitting in the sun. Local events, markets and cultural activities are held here at different times of the year, such as seasonal fairs, concerts and celebrations, and the square comes alive in December with Advent decorations. The square is a good starting point for exploring the town. It is well connected by public transport and by road, and it is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets. The Museum of Turopolje, which presents the history, archaeology and ethnography of the region, is a short distance away and gives a deeper understanding of the area, including the wooden architecture and the traditional way of life of the Turopolje plain. Wooden chapels and old oak forests, such as the Turopoljski Lug, are among the distinctive features of the region, and the native Turopolje pig, a black, curly-haired breed, is a local symbol. The Ključić Brdo recreation area, a green hill with lakes and walking paths, offers an escape for those who want fresh air.

There is no entrance fee, and the square is open at all times. It can be busy during rush hours and market days, and quieter in the evening. Cafés offer a pleasant place to rest, and restaurants serve both Croatian and international food.

The square suits visitors who have time between flights and want to see something of the local life, as well as residents and travellers exploring Zagreb County. Allow about half an hour, and combine it with a visit to the museum.
