Cigrada Beach

Cigrada Beach is a beach on the island of Murter, in the Šibenik archipelago in central Dalmatia, about two kilometres from the centre of the town of Murter. It is a mixture of pebbles and rock, about 110 metres long, with a sandy entrance to the sea that makes it comfortable for families and young children. The water is clear and turquoise, and the bay is sheltered, so swimming is calm on most days. The beach lies away from the busiest part of town, in a landscape of rocky outcrops, low Mediterranean scrub, olive trees and dry stone walls, and it has a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to people who want a quieter seaside day than the main town beaches provide.

The sea is the main attraction. Because the seabed is a mixture of rock, sand and sea grass, the underwater life is rich, with small fish, sea urchins, starfish and occasionally octopus visible from the surface, and snorkellers and divers are attracted by this variety. Water sports are popular here. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards can be rented, and paddling along the coastline gives a different view of the shore and the nearby islets. Families enjoy the sandy entrance, where children can play in the shallows, and visitors can join in picigin, the traditional Dalmatian ball game played in shallow water, in which players try to keep a small ball from touching the surface.

The beach is well equipped. There are toilets, showers, changing cabins and a car park nearby, so it is practical for a day out, and a beach bar and café serves cold drinks, snacks and traditional Croatian dishes, with a restaurant close by and many more places to eat within a short drive. One drawback is the lack of natural shade, so visitors are advised to bring sun protection, a hat and an umbrella, or to rent one on site. In July and August, the beach can be busy, and arriving in the morning helps to secure a good space. Accommodation in the area is plentiful, with apartments, guesthouses and hotels within walking distance of the sea.

Murter is a lively island with other beaches and attractions. Slanica, Kosirina and Podvrske beaches are popular alternatives, the Raduč lookout offers a wide view over the island and the Kornati archipelago, and the village of Betina, a short drive away, has the Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding and a long tradition of boatbuilding. Boat trips leave from Murter to the Kornati National Park, one of the most famous sailing areas in the Adriatic, and make a good full-day excursion.

The beach suits families, couples, snorkellers and paddleboarders. It is best in June and September, when the water is warm and the crowds are thinner. Bring water shoes for the rocky edges and plan to stay several hours.
