The Museum of Betina Wooden Shipbuilding is a small museum in the village of Betina, on the island of Murter in northern Dalmatia, devoted to a craft that has shaped the village for centuries. Betina is one of the few places on the Croatian coast where wooden boats are still built by traditional methods. Its shipwrights, known locally as kalafati, learned the work from their fathers and grandfathers, and the village's boatyards have produced fishing boats, cargo vessels and sailing craft for generations. The museum tells that story with a mix of modern presentation and authentic objects, in a village that is itself a living example of the tradition.
The exhibition draws on the memories of local craftsmen, whose interviews form part of the displays, along with tools, moulds, boat models, historic photographs and documents. Visitors see how a hull is shaped, how planks are bent and fastened and how a boat is caulked and made watertight, and the museum explains the knowledge passed down within families about timber, curves and balance. One of the highlights is the Betina gajeta, a small traditional wooden boat with a distinctive shape that is recognised as part of Croatia's intangible cultural heritage. The displays range from small fishing boats to larger cargo ships, and they show how the village's economy followed the sea.
The museum is compact, and most visitors spend between half an hour and an hour inside, though the interactive elements and videos can keep children interested for longer. Hours vary by season, so check at the entrance or locally. It is a good rainy-day stop, and it adds meaning to a walk through the village, where you can still see boats under construction, stacks of timber and wooden hulls on the slipway.
Betina itself is a pretty village with stone houses, a harbour and a view toward the Kornati islands, and it is joined to the rest of Murter by a short causeway. Boat trips from the island go to the Kornati National Park, one of the most famous sailing areas in the Adriatic. Murter has several good beaches within reach, including Slanica, Kosirina, Cigrada and Podvrske, and the Raduč Lookout gives a wide view of the coast and islands.
The museum suits maritime enthusiasts, families, craft lovers and anyone curious about the way boats were built before industrial methods took over. Combine it with a stroll along the harbour and a seafood lunch.
