Dom Kulture, the House of Culture, is the main cultural centre of Kutina, a town in the Moslavina region of central Croatia, about seventy kilometres southeast of Zagreb. Almost every Croatian town has a Dom Kulture, a building devoted to performances, exhibitions and community events, and in Kutina it fills that role as the place where the town’s artistic and social life comes together.

The idea of the house of culture belongs to the mid-twentieth century, when towns across the country built or adapted halls to serve as local theatres, cinemas and meeting places. They were intended to bring arts and education to ordinary people, and many are still the main stage for amateur theatre groups, choirs, folk-dance ensembles, school performances and touring companies. Kutina’s is a recognisable landmark in the town centre, and over the years it has hosted theatre, concerts, film screenings, exhibitions and workshops, as well as events organised by clubs and associations.

A visit usually means attending something, so it is worth checking the programme in advance. The schedule varies through the year. Throughout the year, a typical season might include children’s plays, classical or popular music, performances by local ensembles, and exhibitions by regional artists, and the venue also supports educational and youth activities. Tickets are generally modest in price, and the atmosphere is informal and friendly, with many performers and audience members knowing each other. For visitors, an evening there is a good way to see how a small Croatian town entertains itself and to meet local people.

Dom Kulture’s central location makes it easy to combine with a walk through the rest of Kutina. The town centre has a Baroque church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Snow, whose cheerful façade and bell tower are among the oldest features of the town, and the Gallery of the Moslavina Museum shows local history, archaeology and art. The Wine Court is a place to taste the wines of Moslavina, a region known for its white varieties and especially for Škrlet, an indigenous grape that is grown almost nowhere else. Parks and the paths of the nearby Moslavačka Gora, a low forested mountain, give a green counterpoint.

Opening hours and programmes depend on events, so look at the posted schedule or contact the venue before going. It suits people who like live performance, families looking for a children’s show and travellers who enjoy seeing everyday local culture. Evenings are the best time, and booking is only occasionally needed for popular shows.
