Ethno Park Trg

Ethno Park Trg is a small open-air heritage site in the Ozalj area, in Karlovac County, south-west of Zagreb, where the Kupa river runs through hilly country. It is aimed at showing how people in this part of Croatia lived in the countryside in earlier times, through buildings and objects rather than panels and glass cases. The park is a quiet and modest place and is usually seen as a complement to the better-known Ozalj Castle and the local Zavičajni museum.

Open-air ethno parks are common in Croatia and typically bring together reconstructed or preserved village buildings, such as wooden or half-timbered houses, barns, storerooms and workshops. The idea is to present the full range of a traditional farmstead: the house with its central hearth and simple furniture, the outbuildings for animals and tools, and the small plots where families grew food. In the Kupa valley and the wider Pokuplje region, building traditions made use of local timber and stone, with steep roofs designed to shed rain and snow, and buildings placed to make the best use of sun and shelter. Seeing the interiors helps to explain how large families shared small spaces and how work and daily life were organised around the seasons.

Visitors can expect to see household items, agricultural tools and examples of folk art, and, at certain times, demonstrations of traditional skills such as weaving, woodworking and other handicrafts. Interpretation is usually provided through signs and, on occasion, guided tours or events, which are often organised on weekends or during local festivals. Because the park is small and run on a local scale, its programme can vary from year to year, so it is sensible to check ahead if you plan to see a demonstration or a specific event.

The setting is part of the appeal. The Kupa valley is green and quiet, with views of wooded hills and the river, and the paths between the buildings invite a slow walk. Children usually enjoy the animals, if present, and the chance to step into a house that is different from a modern home.

A visit takes around an hour, and it combines naturally with the castle, which stands on a rock above the river, and with the town's museum. Ozalj lies about an hour from Zagreb by road, and a combined day trip can include a walk along the Kupa. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The site suits families, school groups and travellers who like local and traditional culture.
