Zavičajni Museum

The Zavičajni Museum in Ozalj is the local history museum of a small town on the Kupa River, a short drive south-west of Zagreb and close to the Slovenian border. The word zavičajni means of the homeland or local, and the museum's task is to preserve the story of Ozalj and its surroundings. The museum stands on Ulica Zrinskih i Frankopana, a street named after the two families, and it is housed in the town's best-known landmark, Ozalj Castle, a medieval fortress on a rock above the river.

The castle gives the museum an unusually strong setting. It was first mentioned in the 13th century and later belonged to leading noble families, notably the Frankopans and the Zrinskis, whose names recur through Croatian history. In the 17th century Ozalj was the home of an important literary and political circle gathered around the Zrinski and Frankopan families, known as the Ozalj Circle, and the castle's role in that period gives the museum a special place in the cultural history of the country. The town also holds an unusual piece of technical history, as an early hydroelectric power plant was built here on the Kupa at the beginning of the 20th century.

Inside, the museum presents the story of the area through objects, documents and photographs. Displays usually cover archaeology, local trades and customs, the noble families who held the castle and the daily life of the people of the Kupa valley. The museum is not large, but its rooms are interesting, and they give a feel for how a castle functioned as both a fortress and a home. From the walls and terraces you can look down over the river, which is the reason the site was chosen in the first place, as it controlled a crossing and the road along the valley.

A visit takes an hour or two, and the opening hours vary with the season, with a longer day in summer. It is wise to check locally, particularly for groups, who can often arrange a guided visit by appointment. The museum can be combined with a walk beside the Kupa, a stop at the Ethno Park Trg and a look at the castle exterior and its grounds.
