Gradski muzej Vinkovci, or the Vinkovci Municipal Museum, is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the deep and varied history of eastern Croatia. Located in the heart of Vinkovci, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited towns, the museum offers a fascinating journey through nearly 8,300 years of local heritage—from the Neolithic period to the present day.
The museum’s permanent exhibitions showcase an impressive array of archaeological artifacts, including pottery, tools, and artwork from the ancient Roman settlement of Cibalae, as well as items from the Late Neolithic Sopot culture and the Early Bronze Age Vinkovci culture. One highlight is the largest collection of Avar graves in Croatia, providing unique insight into the region’s early medieval history. Ethnographic displays further enrich the experience, featuring traditional costumes, household items, and objects that reflect the everyday life and customs of the local population.
Housed in an architecturally appealing building, the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events, making each visit unique. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are available to answer questions and enhance the visitor experience. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. A museum shop offers souvenirs and publications for those wishing to take a piece of Vinkovci’s history home.
