The Lipizzaner Stud Farm in Lipik, known in Croatian as Ergela Lipik, is a working stud and a centre for one of the best-known horse breeds in the world. Lipik lies in Požega-Slavonia County, in the green foothills of western Slavonia, and the stud sits on the edge of the town, with paddocks, stables and open meadows in a calm landscape. It is among the principal places in Croatia where the Lipizzan horse is bred and kept.

The breed has a long history. Lipizzans descend from horses first bred in the 16th century at the Habsburg court stud at Lipica, in what is now Slovenia, where Spanish, Italian and local horses were crossed to create a strong, elegant animal suited to the classical riding school in Vienna. The foals are born dark, grey or black, and turn white gradually over several years, which surprises many visitors. The stud at Lipik was founded in 1843 by Count Izidor Janković, and it has been a place for Lipizzan breeding for generations. In 2022 the breeding traditions of the Lipizzan horse were inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, shared with several countries.

The Homeland War hit Lipik very hard. The town was badly damaged in 1991 and the stud suffered heavy losses, with horses lost or dispersed. After the war the buildings were restored, the herd was gradually rebuilt and the stud became a symbol of recovery for the town. The old stables, the wooden chapel from the 18th century, and the neighbouring Lipik Spa Park give the surroundings a historic feel, and the spa town itself is known for its thermal water and its restored 19th-century buildings.

A visit usually includes a guided tour, a chance to see the horses in their paddocks and stables, and sometimes a short riding or carriage demonstration. Families with children can often take part in simple activities, and the pace is relaxed. Programmes and fees depend on the season and on group size, so check in advance and book if you are travelling with a group. Wear sturdy shoes, as the ground can be muddy after rain.

The farm suits horse lovers, families and anyone interested in living heritage. It is easy to combine with a walk in the Lipik Spa Park and a look at the stables and other attractions in town, and with a day of exploring the countryside of Slavonia, with its vineyards and small villages.
