Mrežnica River

The Mrežnica River is one of the most beautiful rivers in central Croatia, a clear stream that rises in the hills of central Croatia and flows north through woods and meadows to join the Korana near Karlovac. Along the way it passes through Duga Resa, a small town that grew up around it, and in the area of the town and the stretch above it the river spreads out into pools, bends and a series of travertine cascades, so that the water is constantly changing between calm and rushing. The Mrežnica is often compared with the Plitvice Lakes, though it is much smaller and far quieter.

The key to the river's character is tufa, or travertine, the soft rock deposited by lime-rich water as it flows over mosses and algae. Over thousands of years the process has built low barriers across the river bed, and the river tumbles over them in small, frothing waterfalls. Between the falls it lies in deep green and turquoise pools, so clear that you can see fish and water plants below the surface. In places, small islands, reed beds and old mills break up the course. The area is rich in wildlife, with kingfishers, herons, otters and many kinds of fish and dragonflies.

Duga Resa has an industrial history that is closely tied to the river. In the late 19th century a large cotton factory was built here, using the river for power and water, and it became the main employer in the town for generations. The old factory buildings and workers' housing are still visible in the town, and they give the place a character that is different from other river towns. Today the river is used mostly for leisure, and the water is a draw for swimming, canoeing and kayaking, with rental places upstream. The current is gentle, so canoes are suitable for beginners and families, and a paddle downstream passes the falls and the pools in a few hours. Footpaths and cycling routes follow the banks, with views of the forest and the hill of Vinica.

The surroundings offer more. The vineyards of Duga Resa produce wine on the slopes above the river, and local cellars welcome visitors. Karlovac, with its star-shaped old town, is only a short drive away, and the lakes and rivers of the area make it a good region for a summer holiday.

The river suits families, paddlers, walkers and photographers. Late spring and early autumn are the best seasons, when the water is clear and the crowds thinner. Wear water shoes and take care on the slippery tufa.
