Museum of the City of Karlovac - Ethnological Collection

The Museum of the City of Karlovac, housing the Ethnological Collection, is located in one of Croatia’s oldest preserved Baroque residential buildings, constructed in the early 17th century. This historic palace, built around 1631 by General Vuk Krsto Frankopan, serves as the backdrop for the museum’s exhibits. The institution’s origins trace back to 1904, when the Town Council supported its establishment, though active collection efforts did not begin until 1952 under Professor Ivana Vrbanić, the first professional curator. The museum has operated in this building since 1953, merging with the Painting Gallery in 1954 to create a comprehensive cultural center.

Visitors can explore a diverse array of artifacts that reflect Karlovac’s social and cultural history. Notable items include two paintings by Vjekoslav Karas and Petar Lukšić’s “bone shaker,” recognized as the city’s first bicycle. The building itself holds significant historical weight, having hosted the nuptials of Katarina Frankopan and Petar Zrinski in 1641 and served as a residence for Ivan Josip Herberstein. The ethnological collection offers insights into traditional lifestyles and customs, providing context to the region’s heritage.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 08:00 to 16:00, with extended hours on Wednesday until 19:00. It is also open on weekends from 10:00 to 12:00. Admission fees are modest, with adult tickets priced at 10 HRK and reduced rates of 5 HRK for pupils, students, and pensioners. Entry is free for small children and disabled visitors.
