Schoenstatt shrine

The Schoenstatt Shrine in Mala Subotica is a small Catholic chapel in the Međimurje region of northern Croatia, close to the Hungarian border and a short drive from Čakovec. It is dedicated to Mary, honoured in the Schoenstatt tradition as the Queen of Hearts, and it was established on 22 January 2009 by the Schoenstatt Movement of Croatia. It is the second Schoenstatt shrine in the country. The shrine is a place for prayer, reflection and community gatherings, and its quiet grounds are open to both pilgrims and curious visitors.

The Schoenstatt Movement began in 1914 in Germany, at the village of Schoenstatt near Vallendar, where Father Joseph Kentenich led a group of young students in a small chapel. The movement spread to many countries, and each Schoenstatt shrine is built as a copy of that original chapel, a modest building with a simple interior and a picture of Mary. Shrines are therefore recognisable around the world by their small size and their shared design. The Mala Subotica shrine follows this pattern and acts as a spiritual home for local members, as well as a destination for those from other parts of Croatia and abroad.

The shrine's schedule is organised around regular services and celebrations. It is open in the evening, and visitors can attend Mass, adoration and confession when these are offered. A special celebration called the Bündnisfeier, or Covenant of Love celebration, takes place on the Sunday after the 18th of each month, a date linked to the foundation of the movement on 18 October 1914. The patronal feast of the shrine, honouring Mary as Queen, is celebrated on the Saturday after 22 August, which is a good time for visitors who want to see the shrine at its busiest and most festive.

The chapel is small, so a visit is usually short and quiet. Visitors should dress modestly and keep conversation low, since people come here to pray. The setting is rural and peaceful, with fields and gardens around, and the small grounds offer places to sit and reflect.

The shrine suits pilgrims, members of the Schoenstatt family and anyone interested in religious life in Međimurje. It is located at Nikole Tesle bb in Mala Subotica and can be reached by car, with parking nearby.
