Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Belica

Belica is a village in Međimurje, the small, green region in the far north of Croatia between the Mura and the Drava, not far from the town of Čakovec. The countryside around it is a patchwork of maize fields, orchards, vineyards and small villages, and in the middle of it stands the parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is among the best-known places of Catholic Marian devotion in the region. Many Croatian pilgrims know Belica for one reason: the pilgrimage to the Black Madonna.

The Black Madonna is a statue of the Virgin Mary, with a dark face and hands, kept in the church and venerated as miraculous. Statues of this kind exist in a number of shrines across Central Europe, from Częstochowa in Poland to Marija Bistrica in Croatia, and in Belica the statue is the focus of prayer and pilgrimage. The dedication of the church to the Assumption of Mary, the feast celebrated on 15 August, makes that day the main celebration of the year, when pilgrims arrive from surrounding villages and farther afield for Mass, processions and a village fair. Outside the feast days, the church is quieter, a place where local people light candles, say prayers and ask for help.

Visitors find a parish church of a type that is common in Međimurje, a building of modest size with a bell tower, set among trees, and with an interior in which the main altar and the Marian statue are the principal focus. Little is recorded about the building's history, so it is best to see it as a living place of worship with a long tradition, rather than as a museum. A visit usually takes thirty minutes to an hour, longer if you wish to sit in quiet or attend a service. Dress modestly, keep voices low and respect worshippers. Opening times depend on the parish and on services, so ask locally.

Belica lies in a landscape that rewards slow travel. Cycling routes run along the country roads, small family farms produce wine, pumpkin-seed oil and cheese, and Čakovec, with its castle and museum, is only a short drive away. The thermal baths of the region and the vineyards of the Međimurje hills are within reach.
