Spomen park Sokolovac

Spomen park Sokolovac, perched on Hawk’s Peak just outside the center of Požega, is a scenic and historically significant destination for visitors to this part of Slavonia. The park is named after friar Luka Ibrišimović Sokol, a local hero who played a pivotal role in liberating Požega from Ottoman rule. In recognition of his bravery, he was honored with the nickname “Sokol” (the Hawk) by Emperor Leopold I, and the hill has carried the name ever since.

To reach the park, visitors can follow a moderately steep hiking path that begins at Požega’s main square and winds through Kalvarija (The Way of the Cross) and past St. Anne’s chapel. At the summit, a large cross—erected in 1999 to replace an older 19th-century one—stands as a symbol of the town’s resilience and faith. The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, stretching across the Požega valley to the distant Krndija hills and Papuk Mountain Nature Park.

Spomen park Sokolovac is open 24 hours a day, making it an accessible spot for sunrise hikes, afternoon strolls, or quiet reflection at sunset. There are no admission fees, and most visitors spend one to two hours exploring the area and soaking in the views.
