The Old Mill

The Old Mill in Severin na Kupi is a historic watermill on the Kupa River, in a quiet village in Gorski Kotar, in the western part of Croatia, near the Slovenian border. It is a modest rural monument, and its interest lies in what it tells about the way people lived along the river over many generations.

The Kupa is one of the main rivers of this part of Croatia. It rises from a spring at the foot of Risnjak, in the mountains of Gorski Kotar, and flows eastward for almost three hundred kilometres, forming part of the border with Slovenia for much of its upper course, before joining the Sava. In its upper reaches it is a clear, cool and fast-flowing river, with deep green pools and rapids, and it has long been valued for fishing, swimming and canoeing. For farming villages along its banks, the river was also a source of power. Water-driven mills were built at points where the current was strong or where a weir could raise the water, and in each valley the mill was one of the most important buildings.

The role of the mill was central. Farmers brought their grain, usually wheat, rye or maize, to be ground into flour for bread and polenta, and they paid the miller with a share of the flour. The mill was also a meeting place, where people exchanged news and gossip while waiting for their turn. A typical mill of this region was a low building of stone and timber beside the river, with a channel diverting water to a wooden wheel under the floor, and inside, a pair of millstones, a hopper and a system of wooden gears. As the twentieth century brought electricity and industrial mills, village mills fell out of use, and many were left to decay. Those that survive are valuable reminders of a vanished way of life.

While a visit to the mill is brief, it is best treated as part of a broader exploration of Severin na Kupi’s village charm and the Kupa’s banks. The village stands on a rise above the Kupa valley, and its medieval castle, a stronghold of the Frankopan nobles, is a remnant of the defensive network that protected this area during the wars with the Ottomans, the Turkish forces of the time. The landscape around is green and peaceful, with forested slopes, meadows and the river itself, and the riverbanks are a pleasant place for a walk or a picnic. Treat any mill with respect, because old structures can be fragile, and stay on paths. The site suits people interested in rural history, photography and river landscapes, and it fits well into a day trip from Delnice or Karlovac.
