Trg Svetog Trojstva

Trg Svetog Trojstva, the Holy Trinity Square, is the small central square of Kopačevo, a village in Baranja, in the north-east of Croatia, next to the Kopački Rit Nature Park. Like the church that stands beside it, which has its own entry in this guide, it is a place of everyday village life rather than a monument, and the best way to appreciate it is as a quiet stop in a landscape that has few landmarks. Baranja is flat, open country between the Drava and the Danube, and small village squares play an important role as places where people meet.

The name refers to the Holy Trinity, a common dedication in Catholic churches and public spaces in Slavonia and Baranja, often connected with votive monuments erected in the eighteenth century in thanks for deliverance from plague. Many squares in the region are named after such monuments, and a Trinity column, with its carved figures, is a typical feature of the central squares of Habsburg-era towns, though you should not assume one stands here. What you can expect is an open space of grass and paving, with mature trees providing shade, traditional single-storey houses with long gardens along the sides, and the church tower nearby. The surroundings reflect the mixed heritage of the village, which has had Croatian and Hungarian residents, and in which the church bells and the local festivals follow an annual rhythm.

The square is used for community events, such as village celebrations, seasonal markets and gatherings connected with the church feasts, which add colour and music to an otherwise quiet place. Local people may offer visitors a friendly greeting, and some events, such as harvest days and fishing competitions, give a good glimpse of the culture of the area. For many visitors, the importance of Kopačevo lies in its position at the edge of Kopački Rit, one of the largest and best-preserved wetlands in Europe. Cyclists find the flat roads and the dykes ideal for riding, and routes link Kopačevo with the neighbouring villages and the vineyards of Baranja. The cuisine is renowned: fish stew, spicy sausages and strudels are served in village inns.

There are no admission fees, and the square is open at all times. Bring insect repellent in summer, a hat and comfortable shoes. Allow about fifteen minutes for the square, and a half day for the wider area. It suits cyclists, nature lovers and travellers who like to see ordinary village life in the Danube region.
