Vidova Gora

Vidova Gora is the highest peak on the island of Brač, rising to about 780 metres above the sea, and it is the highest point on any island in the Adriatic. It stands above the town of Bol, on the southern side of the island, and from its summit the whole Dalmatian archipelago of central Dalmatia lies spread out below. On a clear day, the view takes in the islands of Hvar, Vis and Korčula, the long outline of the mainland coast with the Biokovo mountains, and, directly beneath, the famous Zlatni Rat, the Golden Horn, a spit of white pebbles that points into the sea like a finger.

The mountain is easy to reach, which is part of its appeal. An asphalt road climbs from Bol in a series of bends through pine woods and scrub, and visitors who come by car or taxi can be at the top in about twenty minutes, with parking near the summit. More active visitors can take a hiking trail that starts in Bol and climbs through the pine forest, a steep walk that takes a few hours and requires sturdy shoes, water and a hat, because shade is limited near the top. The path passes through scrub and rocks, with views opening out as you gain height, and the descent is hard on the knees.

At the summit there is a large stone cross and the remains of a small old church, a reminder that high places like this were often sacred. The name Vidova Gora refers to St. Vitus, in Croatian Sveti Vid, to whom a chapel was dedicated here, and the name has stayed with the mountain. The setting is quiet, with the sound of wind and the occasional bell from grazing animals, and the scale of the view gives a sense of space and light that is hard to find elsewhere. A small restaurant or refreshment stand may operate in summer, but facilities are limited, so it is wise to bring water.

The best time to go is early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the air is clearer, and the sunset from the summit is memorable. Check the weather before you set out, since cloud can hide the view and the wind at the top can be strong. In Bol, other places worth seeing include the Bol Art Gallery (Galerija Bol), the Bol Olive Grove Trail, the village of Gornja Sela and Zlatni Rat itself.

The summit suits walkers, photographers and families who want a spectacular view without a long climb.
