Tršće’s history is rooted in the rugged landscapes of Gorski Kotar, a region long known as the 'green lungs' of Croatia. The village developed as a forestry and farming community, with its residents living in step with the surrounding mountains and forests. Timber was cut and carried, charcoal was burned and small fields of potatoes and oats were cultivated on clearings, and the way of life was shaped by long winters. Over the centuries Tršće has kept its traditional character, with wooden houses, quiet lanes and a strong sense of community. The area’s high elevation and clean environment have made it a favorite retreat for those seeking clean air, tranquility and outdoor adventure. The nearby border with Slovenia has long been a line of trade and kinship, and many families have relatives on both sides.
The main attractions in Tršće are its natural surroundings and opportunities for recreation. The village is a gateway to a network of hiking and cycling trails that wind through forests and meadows and up to scenic viewpoints. In spring and summer the landscape is vibrant with wildflowers, while autumn brings a riot of color to the hillsides. Winter turns Tršće into a snowy landscape, suited to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding, and the snow cover is often reliable from December to March. The nearby Čabar area offers more trails, mountain huts and opportunities for wildlife watching, and the town’s small museums and shops are worth a visit.
Tršće is also a base for exploring the wider Gorski Kotar region. Day trips can be made to Risnjak National Park, where the Kupa River rises from a spring in a forested hollow, to the upper Kupa valley and to the Slovenian border, all within easy reach by car or bike. The region is rich in biodiversity, with chances to spot deer, foxes and many bird species, and bears and lynx live in the deeper forests. Local guides offer excursions into the forests, sharing knowledge of the area’s flora, fauna and folklore, and some also arrange tracking visits for those who want to learn about large predators. Visitors should be careful in the woods, keep to marked paths and carry water and a map.
The village itself is peaceful and welcoming, with family-run guesthouses, mountain lodges and small restaurants serving hearty local cuisine. Specialties include wild game, mushrooms, homemade bread and pastries, and in autumn the chestnuts and berries of the forest appear on menus. Community events and festivals celebrate rural traditions, music and seasonal harvests, offering visitors a chance to experience authentic Gorski Kotar hospitality. Evenings are cool even in July, and a fire in the stove is a common welcome.
Because Tršće is far from the main routes, a stay here is for those who enjoy solitude. Phone coverage can be patchy in the valleys, shops are few and fuel stations are in Čabar and Delnice, so it is sensible to bring supplies and to plan routes in advance. The reward is silence, dark skies full of stars and the pleasure of walking for hours without meeting another person.
Getting to Tršće is straightforward. The village is accessible by road from Čabar, Delnice and Rijeka, with well-maintained roads leading into the center of Gorski Kotar. Public transport options are limited, so having a car is recommended for flexibility in exploring the region. Accommodation ranges from rustic lodges and guesthouses to private apartments, many with views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
The best time to visit Tršće is from late spring to early autumn, from May to September, when the weather is mild and the trails are open for hiking and cycling. Winter is also a lovely time, with snow-covered landscapes suited to winter sports and cozy evenings by the fire. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation or a deep connection with nature, Tršće offers a serene and authentic stay in the mountains of Croatia’s interior.
