Beach Zrće

Beach Zrće is one of the most famous beaches in Croatia, and it lies on the island of Pag, in the northern Adriatic, near the town of Novalja. By day it is a pebble-and-sand resort beach, and by night it is the country’s best-known party strip.

The beach is a long strip of pebbles and sand, about two and a half kilometres in length, on a sheltered bay on the north-western coast of Pag, a few kilometres from Novalja. The water is clear and turquoise, and the shore shelves gently, so that swimming is easy. Facilities are typical in the daytime, when the beach is a resort like many others, with loungers and umbrellas for hire, water sports and shallow areas where children can play. Behind it, however, stands a strip of open-air clubs, bars and restaurants that have made Zrće a magnet for young visitors from across Europe, and from late spring to early autumn it hosts a continuous programme of parties, DJ sets and music festivals.

The atmosphere varies through the day. In the morning, the beach is relatively quiet, with people recovering from the night before, and the pace picks up in the afternoon, when beach bars start to play music and the crowd grows. As evening comes, the clubs along the shore open, and some of them, such as the Papaya Club, are known across the region, attracting international DJs and large crowds into the early hours. Festivals held here during the summer, some lasting several days, bring thousands of visitors, and the place has the feel of an open-air festival. It is therefore not a destination for those who want peace and quiet, and in peak season it can be loud and crowded.

For those seeking a calmer experience, Pag has plenty of alternatives. Quieter beaches and coves lie along the coast, and Novalja, a short distance away, has a lively harbour, restaurants and the Roman Aqueduct, as well as the Life on Mars Trail, a hike through a lunar landscape. Because Zrće is so popular, accommodation in Novalja and the surrounding villages fills early in summer, so book ahead.

Practical advice is simple. Bring sun protection, water and water shoes for the pebbles, keep an eye on belongings and drink responsibly. The beach suits young people, groups of friends and festival-goers, and families may prefer to visit in the daytime, when the atmosphere is more relaxed. The season runs roughly from June to September, with July and August the busiest.
