Cetina Canyon

The Cetina River rises in the Dinaric Alps, flows for around a hundred kilometres across the Dalmatian hinterland and enters the Adriatic Sea at Omiš, and at its lower end it cuts a deep canyon through the limestone ridge between the mountains Mosor and Omiška Dinara. The result is one of the most dramatic gateways on the Croatian coast: sheer grey cliffs close in on both sides, the river runs green and fast between them and the town of Omiš sits at the mouth, squeezed between rock and sea. The Cetina Canyon has shaped the history of the town, and it is the main reason people visit it.

Omiš has a colourful past as a base of pirates. In the Middle Ages, the Omiš pirates, or Omiški gusari, used the narrow mouth of the river to hide their light, fast ships and to raid vessels passing along the coast, and they became so troublesome that Venice and Hungary fought to control them. Old fortifications recall that period: the Starigrad Fortress (Fortica) stands on a crag above the town, and the Mirabella Fortress, also called Peovica, sits on a spur with a view over the canyon and the sea. The Church of St. Peter (Crkva sv. Petra na Priku), a small old church on the shore, adds to the medieval scene.

Today the canyon is a centre for outdoor activities. Boat trips run from Omiš up the river, offering a slow ride between the cliffs, past reed beds and swimming spots, and some stop at a riverside restaurant. Rafting and kayaking on the river are popular with groups and families, and the water is cold and clear, with stretches of calm and short rapids that suit beginners. Canyoning and zip-lining over the gorge offer more adrenaline, and guided tours are available for different levels of experience. Hiking and climbing routes lead up the cliffs, with views over the canyon, and the area is also known for free climbing.

Visiting the canyon itself costs nothing, and anyone can walk along the riverbank near Omiš or look up from the town. Activities, boats and tours have their own schedules and prices, so book in advance in summer and check weather and water levels. Wear water shoes, bring a towel and sun protection, and follow the guides' instructions.

The canyon suits adventurers, families, photographers and history lovers who enjoy a place where nature and pirate legend meet. A half-day is enough for a boat ride or a short rafting trip.
