Crikvenica lies on the Kvarner coast of the Adriatic, between Rijeka and Senj, in a sheltered bay with the island of Krk opposite, and its beach and promenade are the centre of a resort that has been welcoming holidaymakers for well over a century. The town became one of the first climatic health resorts on the Croatian coast in the late 19th century, when doctors began to recommend its mild air and warm sea for patients, and a hotel called the Kvarner Palace and other grand buildings still recall that period. The Crikvenica Beach is the main stretch of shore, running along the town centre beside the Riviera promenade.

The beach is a long, gently curving strip of fine gravel and small pebbles, with sandy patches in places, and the sea floor shelves gradually, which makes it especially suitable for families with young children. The water warms up early in summer and is generally calm, as the bay is protected by the coast and the island opposite. Sunbeds and parasols can be rented along the shore, showers and changing cabins are provided, and lifeguards usually work in season. Behind the beach, a broad promenade lined with palms and other trees links cafés, ice-cream stalls and restaurants where fresh fish, squid and local dishes are served, and in the evenings it fills with strollers.

Water sports are well developed. Snorkelling and diving are possible from the shore and from boats, and the clear water reveals rocky ledges with fish and marine plants a short distance from the beach. Pedal boats, kayaks and paddleboards can be hired, and excursions leave from the harbour to Krk and other islands. The area offers beach volleyball and other sports, and a pleasant coastal path leads in both directions, toward Selce in the south-east and toward Novi Vinodolski beyond.

The town has historic sights as well. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Crkva Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije) belongs to the old Pauline monastery, founded in the Middle Ages by the Frankopan nobles, and the Church of St. Anthony of Padua is another landmark close to the seafront. The Hotel Kvarner Palace is a handsome building from the era when the resort first developed.

Entry to the beach is free, although some sections are managed by hotels or concessions that charge for sunbeds. It is busiest in July and August, and mornings are the quietest time. The beach suits families, couples and older travellers who like an easy seaside holiday with plenty of services. Bring sandals for the pebbles and sun protection for the long afternoons.
