Dulin Ponor

Dulin Ponor is a karst sinkhole in the Gorski Kotar region of Croatia, in the area of Vrbovsko, and it is a place for people who like quiet, wild landscapes. A ponor is the local word for a swallow hole, a spot where a stream or river disappears into the limestone and continues underground, a feature typical of karst country. Gorski Kotar is a mountainous region of dense forests, deep valleys and limestone, where water sinks, flows through hidden caves and reappears elsewhere as springs, so the land is full of such features. The name Dulin Ponor is also shared with the famous Đulin Ponor in the town of Ogulin, a well-known abyss linked to a local legend, so travellers should check which place they are looking for.

The pleasure of the place lies in the setting. It is surrounded by dense forest and rugged terrain, and getting there normally involves a walk along marked trails through beech and fir woods, where you may see wildflowers, mushrooms, birds and signs of larger animals. The region is home to bears, lynx, wolves and deer, though they are shy and rarely seen, and walkers should be careful and make some noise. The trail is a good opportunity to see karst features such as rock outcrops, small depressions and streams that vanish into the ground, and the views from higher points give a sense of the wild character of the region. It is a quiet, unspoiled place, and the sound of water and the forest is the main soundtrack.

The area around Vrbovsko offers more. The Kamačnik canyon, a deep and beautiful gorge with a stream, is among the best walks in Gorski Kotar, and the view from the summit of Bijela Kosa gives a wide panorama. Hiking, kayaking and guided tours are available in the region, and the local cuisine, with game, mushrooms and potatoes, is worth trying.

The site suits hikers, nature lovers and travellers who enjoy off-the-beaten-track places. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, since the weather is mild and the forest is colourful.
