Hotel Royal Airport
Airport hotel near Zagreb
Velika Gorica is a town of several tens of thousands of people on the southern edge of Zagreb, in the flat, fertile region of Turopolje, and it is best known to travellers as the home of Zagreb's international airport. The Hotel Royal Airport is one of the hotels in the area that serve people flying in and out, and it is the kind of place that is chosen for practical reasons: the airport is near, the motorway to Zagreb and the rest of Croatia is close and rooms are available for an early flight or a late arrival.
A hotel of this type typically offers straightforward comfort for business and transit travellers, with rooms, a restaurant and a bar, and often a shuttle to the airport terminal. Because opening arrangements, services and prices depend on the operator and change over time, it is wise to check the hotel's current details and book in advance, particularly for travel at weekends and in peak holiday periods. If you have an early flight, ask about breakfast times and transfers, and if you arrive late, confirm the reception hours.
The town is more interesting than its airport reputation suggests. Turopolje is a historic region with a distinctive identity. In the Middle Ages the local nobles of Turopolje held an unusual form of collective self-government, and their traditions, and the Turopolje pig, an old local breed, are part of the area's heritage. The Museum of Turopolje, in the centre of Velika Gorica, presents the history and culture of the region, and the Central Square of Velika Gorica is a pleasant place for a coffee. Wooden chapels, a feature of the Turopolje villages, are scattered over the plain, built of oak and often decorated with simple painted ornaments, and the village of Lukavec has a historic manor and park.
For a green break, the Ključić Brdo Recreation Area is a wooded hill that offers paths for walking and jogging, picnic places and views over the plain, and the nearby Sava river is a quiet place for a stroll. Zagreb itself is about fifteen kilometres away, reached by road and by a suburban train, so a stay near the airport can be combined with a day in the capital. The A1 motorway links the area with the coast.
The hotel suits business travellers, families with early flights and anyone who needs a practical base. It is not a destination in its own right, but the surrounding region rewards a short exploration.
