Karlobag Beaches

Karlobag lies on the narrow strip of coast between the Velebit mountains and the sea, facing the island of Pag across the channel, and its beaches share the drama of that setting. The mountains rise steeply from the water behind the town, and the sea in front is deep and clear. The result is a stretch of coast that feels wilder and quieter than the busy resorts of the north, with small pebble beaches and rocky coves where the main sounds are waves and wind.

The shore here is mostly pebbly or rocky, and the beaches are small and scattered rather than one long stretch of sand. The water is clean, and it deepens fairly quickly, so it is good for swimming, and it is also a pleasant place to snorkel along the rocks. Tatinja Beach is one of the better-known spots, and others lie on either side of the town and along the road. Some parts have simple facilities, such as a beach bar or a snack stand, and some have none at all, so it is wise to carry water and sun protection. Shoes for walking on pebbles and rocks make swimming easier, and in places there is little shade.

The wind is part of the picture. The bura, a cold and gusty wind from the mountains, can blow hard along this coast, and it changes the sea within minutes. On calm days the water is flat and inviting, while on windy days swimming can be difficult, and it is wise to check forecasts and heed local advice. The mountains also bring cooler evenings than on the islands, and in the cooler seasons a light jacket is useful.

Karlobag has more to offer than the sea. The old town is quiet and modest, with the Capuchin Monastery and the Church of St. Charles Borromeo, the ruins of the Fortica above and an archaeological site that points to the long history of settlement. The Kubus is an unusual local landmark by the shore. The winding coastal road that leads to the town is among the most scenic in the Adriatic, with views of the channel and the islands, and the Velebit uplands behind offer walking and hiking in Paklenica and the northern Velebit.

The beaches suit travellers who prefer quiet to crowds, families who enjoy simple seaside days and drivers following the Adriatic highway who want a place to stop for a swim. Visit in late spring or early autumn for mild weather and empty shores.
