Kulmer Castle

Cernik is a small town in Slavonia, in the Brod-Posavina region of eastern Croatia, on the edge of the fertile Slavonian plain north of the Sava. It has an old centre built around a fortified manor and a large Franciscan church and monastery, and the place gives a good picture of how this part of the country developed under the Habsburgs after the Ottoman period. Kulmer Castle, sometimes called Cernik Castle or the Kulmer-Marković Castle, is the main secular monument of the town.

The history of the site is a layered one. A medieval fortress stood here, and the town changed hands several times in the wars of the 16th and 17th centuries, when this region was part of the Ottoman Empire for more than a century and a half. After the Habsburg reconquest, new owners were given the estates. The castle carries the name of the Kulmer family, among its later owners, and it was also associated with the Marković family, who are remembered for a Baroque rebuilding, with a family coat of arms over the entrance. Like many Slavonian manors, it was later affected by the upheavals of the 20th century, and parts of the building have suffered from neglect and damage.

What can be seen today is a rectangular building around an inner courtyard, with round towers at its corners, and the layout recalls its origins as a fortified house. The architecture mixes older and later elements, and the surviving details give an idea of how a Slavonian noble residence looked. The castle has not been fully restored, so visitors should not expect polished rooms or a full museum, and it is best treated as a historic exterior with atmosphere. Access to the interior and the grounds depends on current arrangements, so ask locally, and be careful around any damaged parts of the building.

The Old Town of Cernik adds to the visit. The Franciscan Monastery and its large church dominate the main square, and the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is another landmark of the place. The surrounding countryside of fields, orchards and forest is pleasant for a drive or a bike ride. The nearby towns of Nova Gradiška and Požega are within easy reach.

The castle suits history enthusiasts, photographers and travellers exploring the lesser-known corners of Slavonia. A short stop is enough, and it combines well with a look at the monastery.
