Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary
Sanctuary for orphaned brown bears in Croatia
Nestled in the small village of Kuterevo within Croatia’s Velebit Mountains, the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary offers visitors a rare chance to observe brown bears in a natural, protected environment. Established in 2002, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for orphaned bear cubs and vulnerable bears, many of whom have lost their mothers or come from zoos. Currently home to around eight or nine bears, the sanctuary is divided into areas for younger and older animals, allowing each to receive appropriate care.
The sanctuary is run by the Velebit Association Kuterevo and relies on the dedication of local and international volunteers. This spirit of cooperation is reflected in the welcoming atmosphere, where visitors can learn about bear conservation and the challenges faced by Croatia’s wild bear population, estimated at around 900-1,000 individuals. The sanctuary is supported by donations and sponsorships, and there is a strong emphasis on the unity of people and nature.
Surrounded by the scenic landscapes of Velebit Nature Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the sanctuary is a peaceful spot for animal lovers and those interested in wildlife protection. While specific opening hours and admission fees are not detailed, visitors typically spend time walking the grounds, observing the bears, and speaking with volunteers about their work. The experience is both educational and moving, set against the backdrop of a close-knit rural community.
