Lopar Marina is the small harbour of Lopar, on the northern peninsula of the island of Rab, in the Kvarner region of northern Croatia. It is a modest, scenic anchorage for boats, close to the long sandy beaches that make Lopar famous, and it works as a convenient gateway to the area’s natural and cultural attractions.
Lopar is unusual in the Croatian islands. Most of the Adriatic coast is rocky, with pebble beaches, but the Lopar peninsula has a series of fine sandy beaches, a rare feature that has made it a favourite with families for generations, because the water is shallow and warm and children can paddle safely. The best known is Rajska plaža, the Heavenly Beach, a broad stretch of golden sand about a kilometre and a half long, shelving gently into the sea, which is sheltered and clear. The marina lies near this beach, and it provides a calm place for yachts and small craft, though specific details about berths and services are not widely published, so boaters should enquire in advance.
The area has a rich history that visitors can explore from the harbour. In the Roman period, the northern part of Rab was settled, and remains of ancient settlement have been found around Lopar, and the peninsula’s geology is of interest, with layered rock and cliffs. Close to the marina, at the Tourist Board office, is an Interpretive Center called Čovik i more, which means Man and the Sea, a small museum that explains the relationship between the local people and the sea over the centuries, including fishing, seafaring and the economy of the island. It is open daily during the season, from the morning until evening, and it is a good place to learn about the maritime heritage while you are docked or walking.
Cultural life adds to the atmosphere. In summer, performances by klapa groups, the traditional a cappella singing of Dalmatia, are held in the evenings, sometimes near the water at the marina. These performances provide a glimpse of local traditions and community life. Visitors can join free guided walking tours to learn about the geology, plants and animals of the peninsula, as well as the remains of the Roman settlements, and they are a good way to see the area’s variety. Traditional stone houses in the village of Lopar add to the character of the place.
The local economy depends largely on tourism, supplemented by agriculture and fishing, and the marina reflects it, a working harbour with a relaxed holiday feel. It suits sailors, families and anyone who wants to combine beach time with a little history. Visit in June or September for calm water and fewer crowds, and bring sun protection.
