Medvednica Mountain

Medvednica Mountain is the mountain that rises directly north of Zagreb, and its highest point, Sljeme, reaches 1,033 metres. It is a nature park, protected since the early 1980s, and it serves as the green lung and playground of the capital, a place where thousands of people go every weekend to walk, cycle, ski or simply breathe fresh air. Its name means bear mountain, though no bears live there today.

One of the best things is that Medvednica’s slopes are close enough to the city that it can be reached in half an hour by car or public transport, and yet it feels like a different world. Beech and oak forests cover most of the slopes, cut by streams and valleys, and above the trees the ridge offers open views over Zagreb and the Sava plain on one side and the hills of Zagorje on the other. A network of marked paths of different lengths and difficulty serves walkers of all abilities, from gentle forest walks for families to longer ridge treks for experienced hikers, and cyclists use forest roads and dedicated trails. In winter, Sljeme has ski runs, and the mountain has hosted international slalom races, so on snowy weekends the slopes are crowded with Zagreb families.

While it is a playground, Medvednica has a rich history. On a ridge on the southern side stands Medvedgrad Castle, a medieval fortress built in the thirteenth century by the bishop of Zagreb as a refuge after the Mongol invasion, and now partly restored as a viewpoint and a venue for events, with a monument to the Croatian homeland nearby. The castle can be reached on foot in an hour or so from the city, and the view from it, over the whole of Zagreb, is among the best in the region. Further along the slopes lies the Veternica Cave, one of the longest in Croatia, which is open for guided tours in the warmer months, and the ruins of a former sanatorium at Brestovac add a hint of mystery.

At the top, the Sljeme Summit has a television tower and a viewing area, and along the ridge a series of mountain huts, such as Puntijarka, serve hearty dishes, including bean stew, sausages and strudel, in a friendly atmosphere. These huts are woven into the culture of Zagreb weekends, and a plate of stew after a walk is almost an obligatory ritual. In summer the forest provides cool shade, in autumn it blazes with colour, in spring it is full of wildflowers and in winter it is white and quiet.

Most of the park can be entered freely at any time, though specific attractions and guided tours may charge fees or have set hours, so check ahead. Take layers, water and a map, since the weather can change quickly, and mind the trail markings. The mountain suits walkers, cyclists, skiers and families, and it is the best short escape from Zagreb.
