Osijek Zoo

Osijek Zoo, officially Zoološki vrt grada Osijeka, is the city zoo of Osijek, the main city of Slavonia in eastern Croatia, and it lies on the bank of the Drava River on the edge of the city. It is a green, shaded place with paths among old trees, and it has been part of the city’s life for decades, with generations of local families visiting as children and returning with their own.

The zoo opened in the mid-twentieth century as a modest collection of animals, and it has gradually grown into a larger institution that keeps well over a hundred species. As with modern zoos elsewhere, the stated aims go beyond display. Zoos today are expected to contribute to education, scientific work and the conservation of species under threat, and they try to design enclosures that give animals space and stimulation. Visitors can see a range of mammals, birds and reptiles, along with an aquarium, and the layout makes it easy to walk the whole site in a couple of hours, in a loop with shaded benches and play areas along the way.

Location is one of Osijek Zoo’s advantages. The Drava flows alongside, and the riverbank gives a quiet, open setting with tall trees and the sound of water, and the zoo is within easy reach of the riverside promenade. Because Osijek is a relatively flat city, the approach by bicycle is popular. The surrounding region, Baranja and Slavonia, has a landscape of rivers, forests and wetlands, including the nature park of Kopački Rit, so a visit to the zoo connects well with the idea of wildlife in the wider area, and the staff often emphasise native species.

The experience is aimed at families. Children can see animals at close range, and there are information boards with details of each species, including where it lives in the wild and what threatens it. A souvenir shop and cafés provide small comforts, and the paths are suitable for pushchairs. Feeding times and special events change through the year, so check the schedule. In hot weather the best time to visit is the morning, when animals are more active and the shade is cooler.

Osijek has many other attractions that fit into a day. The Tvrđa, the baroque fortress district on the river, is one of the best-preserved citadels in the country, with squares, churches and the Archaeological Museum, and the pedestrian bridge over the Drava gives a good view of the river. The catacombs, the Church of the Glorious Name of Mary and the café and restaurant streets of the centre are worth a visit as well.
