Plaža Ručica

Plaža Ručica is a pebble beach near Novalja, on the island of Pag, and it is regarded as one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches on the island. Pag is known for its bare, stony landscape, often compared to the surface of the moon, which was shaped by centuries of sheep grazing, salt-laden wind and the powerful bura. Along the coast near Novalja, the landscape alternates between stony slopes and sheltered coves, and Ručica is one of these coves, set in a dramatic natural frame. The beach is largely undeveloped, and that is the point: there are no rows of sunbeds, no music and no crowds of the kind found at the famous party beach of Zrće, just a quiet shore of smooth pebbles and clear water.

Access adds to the sense of adventure. The beach is reached on foot along a path that leads down through a rocky canyon, and the walk through this dry, pale landscape contrasts with the colours of the sea that appear at the end. The path can be steep and stony in places, so wear sturdy shoes, and bring water, since there are no facilities. The gentle slope of the pebbles into the water makes the beach suitable for swimmers of all ages, and the water is exceptionally clear, with a turquoise tone close to the shore, so snorkelling is rewarding. Small fish, sea urchins and rocky ledges lie just off the beach, and the calm conditions make it good for beginners.

Because amenities are minimal, it is important to come prepared. Bring plenty of water, food, sun protection, a hat and an umbrella, since natural shade is limited, and take all rubbish with you. Wear water shoes for entering the sea, and a towel or mat for sitting on the pebbles. There are no set opening hours or entrance fees, so the beach can be visited at any time, though in the middle of the day in July and August, the heat on the stones can be intense. Early morning and late afternoon offer cooler conditions and softer light. The beach has a high rating among visitors, and its reputation for tranquillity means it attracts people who value peace, but it can still become busy on summer weekends.

The area offers opportunities for other outdoor activities. Kayaking along the coast and hiking on the surrounding hills give a closer look at Pag's unusual terrain, and in Novalja, you can find the Roman aqueduct, a remarkable ancient structure, and the Life on Mars Trail, a walking route through a lunar-like landscape. The town has restaurants, shops and cafés, and a statue of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac stands in a public space.

The beach suits swimmers, couples and walkers who like quiet beaches and natural surroundings. Plan a few hours, and go early to enjoy the calm.
