Rovinj Old Town

Rovinj Old Town, situated on a small peninsula in Istria, offers a labyrinthine network of narrow, pedestrian-only streets that wind through a medieval setting. Originally an island named Ruvigno, the area became a peninsula in the 18th century after the surrounding canal was filled. This unique geography creates a compact, walkable historic center where cars are prohibited, allowing visitors to explore the shaded alleys at a leisurely pace. The town’s cultural identity is distinctly bilingual, with both Croatian and Italian used officially, reflecting its history as a major port under Venetian rule.

The most prominent landmark is the Church of St. Euphemia, perched on a hill overlooking the bay. Built on the site of an earlier basilica, its bell tower provides panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands. The old town retains remnants of its defensive walls, hinting at its past as the largest port city in Istria until the late 19th century. Visitors can wander through the Main Square and the Fish Market, experiencing the daily life of this active fishing port.

The atmosphere is generally relaxed, with the old town accessible throughout the year. While there are no admission fees for the streets or the church exterior, the area serves as a gateway to nearby beaches such as Lone Bay. The narrow, uneven cobblestones require comfortable footwear, and the steep inclines leading to the church may be challenging for some. The bilingual signage and Istriot language spoken by some residents add to the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Rovinj’s layout encourages exploration on foot, offering a blend of historical architecture, maritime heritage, and scenic coastal views without the need for structured tours.
