Silba Island (General Landscape)

Silba Island is a small island in the Zadar archipelago, in the northern Adriatic, and it is known as one of the greenest islands on the Croatian coast, with pine woods that cover much of its gently rolling surface. Unlike many Dalmatian islands, which are bare and rocky, Silba has a soft, wooded character, with olive groves, fields and low stone walls between the trees. The island is long and narrow, only a short distance wide in places, and the landscape changes from one end to the other.

The main settlement, also called Silba, lies in the narrow middle of the island and is the only village of any size. It is a quiet place of stone houses, a small harbour, a few shops and cafés, and a main street where everybody walks, since cars are banned on the island. The islanders have a long seafaring tradition. In the 19th century, Silba was home to many captains and shipowners, who sailed to distant ports and brought back prosperity, and the old captains' houses and a lookout tower called Toreta, built in the 19th century, recall that era. Today the permanent population is small, and the village comes alive in summer when visitors and returning families arrive.

The surroundings are full of walking possibilities. Paths run through the pine forest to quiet coves and beaches, and the sea around the island is clear and turquoise. Sandy beaches are rare in Croatia, but Silba has a few, among them Šotorišće and Pernasca, while rocky coves such as Dobra Voda and Ugljanja offer more secluded swimming. The pines give welcome shade in the hot months, and the air smells of resin and herbs. Birds, butterflies and wildflowers are plentiful, and in spring the island is at its freshest. The Chapel of St. Anthony and the network of Hiking Trails offer further things to see and do.

Silba is reached by boat from Zadar and from other islands, and there are ferries and fast boats in the summer season. The lack of cars is the island's great charm, and visitors get around on foot or by bicycle, so it helps to travel light. Accommodation is mostly in private rooms and apartments, and local restaurants serve fresh seafood. Facilities are limited, so it is wise to bring essentials and book ahead in July and August.

The island suits families, couples and walkers who want a quiet, car-free holiday. Late spring and early autumn are the most peaceful seasons.
