Tatinja Beach

Tatinja Beach is a pebble beach on the coast of Karlobag, the small town on the Velebit Channel in northern Dalmatia, and it is known for clear water and a dramatic backdrop of cliffs and mountains. The beach is about 110 metres long and covered in fine gravel and small stones, which makes it comfortable for lying and walking, although water shoes are useful at the edge of the sea, where the shore is rocky and the way into the water is shallow. It lies less than a kilometre from the centre of Karlobag, so it is close enough to reach on foot or by car, and it is one of the most popular places for swimming in the town. Behind it, the bare grey slopes of the Velebit rise steeply, and across the channel lies the long, pale island of Pag.

The water is the main attraction. It is clear, clean and refreshingly cool, and on hot summer days, when the air temperature can approach thirty degrees, the sea warms to a comfortable temperature of around twenty-six degrees, which is ideal for a long swim. The gravel beach slopes gently, and the area is suitable for families, although children should always be supervised, since the wind and currents in the channel can change quickly. The setting under the cliffs gives the beach a feeling of seclusion, even when it is busy. Some visitors comment on the beauty of the view, with the changing light on the mountains and the sea.

Practical points are worth knowing. There are a few amenities nearby, including restaurants and basic toilet facilities, but reviews note that cleanliness varies, and the beach can become crowded in peak times, particularly in July and August. The approach from the parking area can be steep, so comfortable footwear is recommended, and it is wise to bring water shoes, sun protection, a hat and an umbrella, since natural shade is limited. There are no opening hours or admission fees, and the beach is open to everyone. Arrive early on summer days to find a space, and take rubbish with you. The bura wind, which blows down from the Velebit, can be strong, particularly outside the main season, and it can make the sea rough, so check the weather.

Karlobag offers more to see besides the beaches. The ruins of the fortress called Fortica look over the town, the Capuchin Monastery and the Church of St. Charles Borromeo recall the Baroque rebuilding of the 18th century, and the archaeological site connected with the Roman settlement of Vegium shows the long history of the coast. Kubus Beach and the other town beaches offer alternatives, and the Velebit mountain behind has hiking routes.

The beach suits swimmers, families and travellers driving along the Adriatic highway who want a clean, simple spot for a swim. It is best in the morning, when the sun is gentle and the water is calm.
