Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera)

The Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera) form one of the two main sections of Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s oldest and largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area is renowned for its series of twelve interconnected lakes—such as Prošćansko Jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, and Galovac—set among lush forests and linked by a network of wooden walkways and cascading waterfalls. The lakes are formed on impermeable dolomite rock, which contributes to their distinct turquoise color and the dramatic scenery that draws visitors from around the world.

Exploring the Upper Lakes typically takes two to three hours, with most visitors following the well-maintained wooden paths that wind over the water and through the surrounding landscape. Electric boats and a panoramic train (a bus-like shuttle) are available to help visitors move between different sections of the park, adding variety to the visit.
