Velički grad-Lapjak-Jankovac-Jezerce-Duboka route

The route from Velički grad through Lapjak, Jankovac and Jezerce to Duboka is a long hiking trail in Papuk Nature Park, the forested mountain massif that rises above the plains of Slavonia in eastern Croatia. Papuk is the oldest and largest nature park in the region and was the first area in Croatia to be recognised as a geopark, later gaining UNESCO Global Geopark status, because its rocks tell a long geological story. The mountain is made of ancient crystalline rocks, volcanic deposits and sedimentary layers, and the trails cross a variety of landscapes, from beech woods and rocky ridges to cold streams and quiet lakes. The route links several of the park's best-known places in a single day or more of walking.

The starting point is Velički grad, the ruins of a medieval fortress on a hill above the village of Velika. The castle was built in the Middle Ages to guard the passes of Papuk, and its walls and towers rise above the forest in a picturesque setting. It is one of the best preserved ruins in the area, and the climb to it gives the first views over the surrounding hills. From there, the trail leads along forested slopes and rocky outcrops, with gaps in the trees that open onto the valleys below, toward Lapjak, a point on the ridge where walkers often stop to rest.

The next highlight is Jankovac, a forest park in a deep, green valley at about 475 metres above sea level. It is named after the Janković noble family, who owned the estate in the 19th century and built a hunting lodge here, and it is the most popular destination in Papuk. The valley is known for its cold springs, clear streams and a small lake, and above it Skakavac, the highest waterfall in the park, tumbles down a rocky cliff in a thin white ribbon. Jankovac has a mountain lodge, picnic areas and shady paths, and it is a pleasant place for a long rest, a meal or an overnight stay. Grof's educational trail, a short loop with information boards, starts here and introduces the geology and plants of the area.

From Jankovac, the route continues through more forest to Jezerce, a small lake in the woods, and then descends to Duboka, where mountain cabins offer accommodation for those who wish to break the journey. The trail is generally well marked, with a mixture of forest paths and gravel tracks, but it is long and demanding, and suited to walkers with experience and good fitness. Plan a full day, carry plenty of water, wear sturdy boots and check the weather, since storms can build quickly in summer.

The route suits keen hikers, nature lovers and anyone who wants to see Slavonia's green side. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and the park is much quieter than the coast.
