Papuk Nature Park

Papuk’s story is written in its rocks, forests and old ruins. The mountain range was once an island in the Pannonian Sea, and today its slopes reveal a geological story that spans hundreds of millions of years. The park is home to Croatia’s first geopark, with sites such as Rupnica, a rare formation of volcanic rock, and the Sekulinačke Mountains forest reserve. Medieval fortresses like Ružica Grad and Voćin Castle recall the region’s turbulent past, while the Jankovac Forest Park, with its Skakavac Waterfall and quiet lake, is a favorite spot for hiking, picnicking and wildlife watching. The Skakavac Waterfall drops over a rock face into a wooded gorge, and in spring and after rain it is at its best.

Papuk Nature Park offers a wide range of activities. Many visitors start with a short walk and extend it once they see how well the paths are marked. Well-marked hiking and trekking trails wind through beech and oak forests, up to scenic viewpoints and hidden waterfalls. One of the most rewarding routes links Velički Grad, Lapjak, Jankovac, Jezerce and Duboka, and it takes most of a day. Mountain biking, sport climbing and horseback riding are popular, while the Duboka Adrenaline Park provides fun for families and thrill-seekers. Streams and small lakes are used for canoeing, fishing and swimming in summer. Geocaching, birdwatching and educational programmes introduce visitors to the park’s geology and biodiversity.

The park’s flora and fauna are remarkably diverse, with more than 1,200 plant species, rare orchids and a variety of mammals, birds and butterflies. Geology has a prominent place in the visitor offer. The Geo-info Center Voćin is a modern gateway that explains how the rocks formed and shows samples and models, and Grof’s educational trail is a scenic path with information panels that is suitable for families. These facilities make Papuk a good place to learn as well as to walk. Rangers and guides also run seasonal programmes, and school groups often visit in spring.

The area is also rich in cultural heritage, with traditional villages, wooden churches and local festivals celebrating Slavonian music, cuisine and crafts. Village kitchens serve smoked meat, sausages, stews and cakes, and in the foothills small wineries pour white wines from local grapes. The park’s visitor centers in Velika and Voćin offer maps, guides and information on current conditions and activities.

Getting to Papuk Nature Park is straightforward. The main entrances are near the towns of Velika and Voćin, both accessible by road from Požega, Slavonski Brod and other regional centers. Parking is available, and guided tours can be booked at the visitor centers. Accommodation options include mountain lodges, guesthouses and rural homestays in and around the park. A car is useful for reaching trailheads, since public transport is limited.

The best time to visit Papuk Nature Park is from April to October, when the weather is mild, the forests are lush or ablaze with autumn colors and the trails are suitable for hiking and cycling. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and waterfalls at their fullest, while autumn offers crisp air and vibrant foliage. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation or a journey through geological time, Papuk Nature Park is a rewarding destination in eastern Croatia.
