Gubec Linden (Gupčeva Lipa)

The Gubec Linden Tree, known locally as Gupčeva Lipa, stands quietly beside the Church of St. George (Sv. Juraj) in Gornja Stubica, Croatia. This remarkable linden is more than 400 years old, with a trunk measuring an impressive 4.7 meters in diameter and reaching 9 meters in height. Its gnarled branches and broad canopy are not only a natural wonder but also a living monument to Croatian history.

Visitors find themselves drawn to the Gubec Linden for its unique role in the Great Peasant Rebellion of 1573. Under this very tree, Matija Gubec, a legendary peasant leader, is said to have rallied his fellow insurgents to challenge the oppressive feudal system. The rebellion was ultimately crushed, and Gubec was executed, but the linden remains as the only living witness to these dramatic events. Today, it stands as a symbol of resistance and the enduring spirit of the Zagorje region.

Declared a protected natural monument in 1957, the Gubec Linden is also part of a Living Archive established to preserve its genetic heritage. The site is open to the public, though there are no specific opening hours or admission fees.
