Historic Villas in Čikat Bay
Belle Époque villas of Austro-Hungarian elite
The historic villas of Čikat Bay in Mali Lošinj, Croatia, offer a glimpse into the island’s glamorous past as a retreat for Austro-Hungarian aristocracy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nestled along the picturesque coastline, these villas were originally built as luxurious guesthouses in architectural styles ranging from Art Nouveau to Venetian revival, reflecting the tastes of the elite who vacationed here. By 1912, Čikat Bay had become a renowned health resort and a hub of elegant architecture.
Today, several of these grand villas have been meticulously restored, with five forming part of the “Boutique Hotel Alhambra.” The most notable is Villa Hortensia, which features ten guest rooms, five suites, an apartment, an in-house cinema, and a wellness area, blending historic charm with modern luxury. Other villas, such as Captain’s Villa Rouge (built in 1895), Villa Mirasol, Villa Hygeia, and Villa Sea Princess Nika, each have their own unique character and architectural details, from maritime decor to Art Nouveau elegance.
Visitors to Čikat Bay can stroll along the waterfront, admire the stunning facades, and soak in the Belle Époque ambiance that still lingers in the air. While the villas themselves are now private accommodations or part of exclusive hotels, the area’s lush pine forests, crystal-clear waters, and historic promenades make it a delightful destination for anyone interested in architecture, history, or simply enjoying the timeless elegance of Lošinj’s most famous bay.
