Kapelica

Kapelica is a small chapel in Mrkopalj, a mountain village in Gorski kotar, the forested highland of western Croatia, Croatia’s skiing cradle, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The word means little chapel, and chapels of this kind are a common feature of the region, built at crossroads, on hilltops and at the edge of villages as places for prayer and as landmarks for travellers.

The village is the key to the setting. Mrkopalj lies at around 800 metres above sea level on a high plateau on the western slopes of Velika Kapela, a range that runs between the coast and the interior, surrounded by forests of spruce, fir and beech. The climate is cold and snowy, and for generations people lived from forestry, small farming and crafts such as woodworking. Mrkopalj is also known as the cradle of skiing in Croatia. Local people began using skis for practical transport in winter, and later the village became associated with the sport, with cross-country trails and traditions that continue today. It is an unusual combination of rural simplicity and winter sport.

The village has a long history, and it is mentioned in written records from the fifteenth century. The surrounding area holds the remains of medieval churches and chapels, which show that there was a church presence here long before the modern settlement took shape. These small religious sites are woven into daily life and often mark paths, junctions or viewpoints, so that walking in the district means meeting a chapel every so often, a quiet moment in the forest or on a meadow. Kapelica is one of them, and its importance lies in being part of this web of small places rather than in grand architecture or artworks.

Visitors who come across it usually do so on a walk. A chapel like this is a place to pause, look at the setting and think about the people who built and maintained it. It is generally small, with a simple façade, perhaps a bell or a cross, and a door that may be locked outside of feast days. The meadows and woods around it are the real attraction, with wildflowers in summer and deep snow in winter.

The wider area offers a good deal more. The rock formations of Bijele and Samarske Stijene, a viewpoint at about 1,335 metres, the peak of Velika Zelenica and the archaeological remains of medieval churches all lie within reach of the village, and make Mrkopalj a good base for hikers in summer and skiers in winter.

Bring layers and sturdy shoes, since mountain weather changes quickly. The chapel suits walkers, those interested in rural heritage and people who enjoy quiet places.
