Tuhelj

Tuhelj owes its fame to hot mineral water that rises from deep underground. Local tradition holds that the springs were already used in Roman times, and the village developed gradually as a place for bathing and rest, attracting visitors from across Croatia and Central Europe. Today Terme Tuhelj, also described as Tuhelj Spa and Thermal Springs and located in Tuheljske Toplice near Zabok, is the centrepiece. The complex offers indoor and outdoor thermal pools, water slides, saunas, a wellness centre and treatments such as massages and mud baths. The mineral-rich water is said to be beneficial for muscles and joints, and the spa is popular with families as well as with couples looking for a quiet weekend. Outdoor pools are especially pleasant in summer, while in winter the steam rising from the heated water over a cold landscape is one of the attractions.

Beyond the spa, the village is surrounded by rolling hills where vineyards, orchards and forests alternate. Well-marked hiking and cycling trails run through this countryside and connect Tuhelj with other points of interest in Zagorje. The Krapina Neanderthal Museum, dedicated to the prehistoric site found near Krapina, is within easy driving distance, as is Veliki Tabor Castle, a well-preserved fortified manor on a hill, and the village of Kumrovec, where an open-air ethnographic museum preserves the traditional houses and crafts of the region. Horseback riding, yoga retreats and guided nature walks are offered in the area, so visitors who want something more active than lounging in a pool have plenty of choice.

The village is peaceful and welcoming. Traditional houses with gardens line the roads, and local markets sell vegetables, fruit, honey and other products from nearby farms. Family-run restaurants serve hearty Zagorje cuisine, including roast meat, turkey with mlinci, homemade bread, soups and strudels, and these often come with wine from small producers in the surrounding hills. Agritourism estates organise tastings and meals for groups, and seasonal festivals celebrate the harvest, music and local traditions.

Families find Tuhelj easy to enjoy. Children can splash in the shallow pools while adults rest in the warm water, and the grounds include lawns and play areas where an entire day can pass without leaving the complex. Evenings tend to be calm, with a walk through the village lanes and a simple supper at a local inn. Guests who stay overnight often plan a loose itinerary, soaking in the morning and visiting a castle or museum in the afternoon.

Getting to Tuhelj is easy from Zagreb. The route leads along the motorway toward Zabok and then through the Zagorje hills on local roads, and the drive takes less than an hour in normal traffic. Public buses connect Tuhelj with Krapina, Zabok and other towns in the county. Accommodation ranges from spa hotels and guesthouses to rural villas and private apartments, many with views of the countryside and quick access to the wellness facilities.

May to September is the warmest period, when the outdoor pools are open and the countryside is at its greenest. Spring and early autumn are cooler and calmer, with fewer visitors and good conditions for walks and short drives between castles and villages. Winter weekends can be busy, but a warm pool on a cold day has its own appeal. Tuhelj suits anyone who wants to combine relaxation, light outdoor activity and an introduction to the unhurried life of Zagorje.
