Nikola Zrinski Monument, Donja Dubrava

Donja Dubrava is a village in Međimurje, the small region in the north of Croatia between the Mura and Drava rivers, and a monument there commemorates Nikola Zrinski, one of the most celebrated figures of the seventeenth century in Croatian history. Zrinski, who lived from 1620 to 1664, was the Ban of Croatia, a military commander and a poet, and his family seat was the castle in nearby Čakovec, the main town of Međimurje. He is also remembered for a political stance that called for the defence of Croatian interests against both the Ottomans and the policies of the Habsburg court.

He died in 1664, in an accident while hunting wild boar, at a place in Međimurje that local tradition connects with the area around the village, and the circumstances of his death have been the subject of speculation and legend ever since, with some saying it was no accident. His younger brother, Petar, who took up his role, was executed in 1671 after a failed conspiracy against the Habsburgs, together with Fran Krsto Frankopan, and with that, the power of the Zrinski family came to an end. Because of this history, Nikola Zrinski is remembered with respect, and monuments and streets in Croatia bear his name.

The monument is a simple memorial in a village setting, with no staffed facilities, and it is open to anyone who walks by, with no fee.
